Founded in 1826 the National Academy of Design in New York City is one of the oldest art organizations in this country. The exhibitions held there were annual rites of passage for many of the most gifted American artists, who, until 1994, were obligated to donate a self-portrait when they were elected to associate membership in the academy. When elected to full membership, or academician, artists were required to submit a representative work. This catalogue contains nearly 1,400 works by 581 artists 58 colorplates, 1,370 illustrations.
