Art Institute of Chicago - Museum Accessions - crib quilt acquired - Brief Article

Magazine Antiques, August, 2002 by Eleanor H. Gustafson

The extremely elegant nineteenth-century crib quilt (illustrated below left) is one of twenty-one American quilts acquired through gift and purchase by the Art Institute of Chicago from Shelly Zegart, a Kentucky private collector and authority on quilts. A major addition to the museum's holdings, the quilts come from a number of states and range in date from 1820 to 1982.

Like the example illustrated, most are visually stunning, and as a group they underscore the widespread and continuing appeal of quilts as a means of American artistic expression.
