In the years before and after the turn of the twentieth century the great pastel artist Mary Cassatt experimented with making what are called counterproofs. These are achieved by placing a moistened sheet of paper over a pastel, applying pressure, and pulling a reverse image. Some forty-eight recently discovered counterproofs are discussed in relation to the pastels from which they were made and in the context of Cassatt's work in several mediums. 58 colorplates.
