John Townsend of Newport, Rhode Island, was one of the most gifted of all colonial cabinetmakers. This monograph accompanies an exhibition on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this summer. In it Heckscher has provided a fascinating account of the thriving seaport in which Townsend lived and worked, the members of his family in affiliated trades, and the ways in which he made the elegant block-and-shell furniture for which he is so deservedly well known. 110 colorplates, 124 illustrations.
