The Old Whalers' Church

Magazine Antiques, Nov, 2001 by Remi Sprig

THE OLD WHALER'S New York, is Sag Harbor; New York, is planning a restoration of its steeple which was destroyed by a hurricane in 1938. Attributed to the architect Minard Lafever (1797-1854), the church was completed in 1844. At 187 feet, the steeple was reportedly the tallest wooden example in the world and could be seen at sea for miles by homecoming whalers.

The institution is seeking photographs, documents, letters, postcards, and newspaper articles relating to the church and its steeple for an upcoming traveling exhibition.
