YOUNGSTOWN: The Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., 44502. The Butler Institute of American Art is the first structure in the United States built specifically to house a collection of American art. Founded in 1919, The Butler is one of the nation's most renowned museums of American art. The museum, housed in a classically designed monument of Georgian and Carrara marble, is itself considered an architectural masterpiece and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. OAK PARK: The Ernest Hemingway Birthplace, 339 Oak Park Avenue, and The Hemingway Museum, 200 N. Oak Park Avenue, 60302. The Hemingway campus includes the restored Victorian home where Ernest lived for the first 6 years of his life, and the Musuem which explores his life, highlighting the first 20 years: his family experiences, education, love of the outdoors and involvement in WWI. SPRINGFIELD: Dana-Thomas House State Historic Site, 301 East Lawrence Ave., 62704. One of the best preserved and most complete of Frank Lloyd Wright's early "Prairie" houses. Designed by Wright for Springfield socialite Susan Lawrence Dana. Little has been changed since its construction in 1902-04, the house has over 100 pieces of original Wright- designed furniture, 250 art-glass doors and windows and nearly 200 light fixtures and skylights. ST. LOUIS: Saint Louis Art Museum, Forest Park, One Fine Arts Drive, 63110. The Saint Louis Art Museum is one of the nation's leading comprehensive art museums. Its collections include works of art of exceptional quality from virtually every culture and time period. MICHIGAN
MUSKEGON: Hackley & Hume Historic Site, Muskegon County Museum, corner of W Webster Ave. & Sixth St. (business route U.S. 31 South), 49440. Built in 1889, the homes of Muskegon's most famous lumber barons, Charles H. Hackly and Thomas Hume, feature lavish woodcarving, outstanding stenciling, marvelous stained glass and period furnishings in the highest tradition of Victorian Decorative Arts. The Site is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been rated by AM as "One of Michigan's best examples of Victorian Homes." INDIANAPOLIS: President Benjamin Harrison Home. The 1875 Italianate Victorian Home of our 23rd U.S. President (1889-1893) is located in the historic "Old Northside Neighborhood" and figured prominently in Harrison's campaign. This beautifully preserved three-level residence is a national historic landmark and holds many of the paintings, furniture and other artifacts belonging to the Harrisons. Guided Tours reflect the Victorian period and highlight the deep political traditions within the Harrison family The award-winning reconstructed carriage house features an extensive women's suffrage exhibit, "Bustles to Ballots."
