June fairs in London

Magazine Antiques, May, 2005 by Miriam Kramer

June is London's high season for art and antiques enthusiasts when six fairs take place and important auctions are held to take advantage of the influx of visitors from all over the world.

On June 9, three fairs open at Olympia. The Fine Art and Antiques Fair is by far the largest and most varied. It runs to June 19, as does the HALI Fair: Carpets, Textiles and Tribal Art. The ABA International Antiquarian Book Fair closes on June 12, and this year has three themes centering on the sea: Admiral Horatio Nelson; Arthur Wellesley, first duke of Wellington; and political satire and caricature.

The Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair takes place at the eponymous hotel from June 15 to 22. This year the emphasis is on contemporary works of art, and each dealer is being invited to show one such piece related to his or her discipline. The loan exhibition is composed of works by craftsmen presently working in the United Kingdom. The curator is Sir Nicholas Goodison. The loan exhibition was organized by the British Antiques Dealers' Association.

The International Ceramics Fair and Seminar takes place at the Park Lane Hotel from June 16 to 19. As usual it is accompanied by a lecture series. Art-London, a showcase for modern and contemporary art, will be at Burton's Court in Chelsea, from June 8 to 12.
