January 15 and 16, 2005. St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. MAHOGANY AUCTIONS is an annual auction featuring fine, antique, West Indian mahogany furniture from the 1700s and 1800s. Though the focus of the auction is on items made in the U.S. Virgin Islands, namely St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John (the former Danish West Indies), the auction also presents items made during the colonial era on the other sugar islands of the Caribbean--Barbados, Jamaica, and Cuba being some of the most prominent. Antiques made in Europe of exotic Caribbean woods are also offered. And punctuating the auction are a number of intriguing "smalls": a pair of mother-of-pearl opera glasses; a sterling silver corkscrew by Georg Jensen; rare books and maps; a 1950s' motorbike, equipped with all its original special features; a vintage leopardskin coat from a 1940s' socialite; and wine from the 1800s, for example. The collection was hand-picked by St. Croix-born fashion designer/lawyer/historian Wayne James from some of Scandinavia's finest homes and oldest families. James has been collecting colonial antiques of the West Indies for over 20 years and boasts one of the world's leading, privately held collections. All items for the January 2005 auction are museum-quality, and over 200 lots will be presented. Preview Party: Monday, January 10, 2005. Auction Preview: Tuesday, January 11 to Friday, January 14, 2005. Auction (lots 1-99): Saturday, January 15, 2005. Auction (lots 100-225): Sunday, January 16, 2005. Location: Walsh Metal Works Gallery, 14-A Estate Peter's Rest, Chistiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. For more information, visit: www.Mahogany-Auctions.com.
