Gender in children's portraits

Magazine Antiques, August, 1995 by Allison Eckardt Ledes

This survey reveals much about the ways in which children were reared in the last century and how attitudes toward children evolved rapidly as society learned more about their behavior and could more realistically evaluate their aptitudes and interests.

The catalogue, which has the same title as the exhibition, contains 144 pages, 10 color plates, and 128 illustrations. It may be obtained for $24 (paper covers) postpaid from the Heritage Plantation of Sandwich, P.O. Box 566, Grove Street, Sandwich, Massachusetts 02563.
