U.S. service industries face open questions - service industry regulations under the single European market

The U.S. government, with support from private sector companies, held a series of consultations with the Commission on this issue during the course of 1991. The United States illustrated that privacy concerns can be met through alternatives to informed consent. For Example, in "opt-out" systems consumers have the right to have their names deleted from mailing lists.

Various committees of the European Parliament have completed reviews of the draft directive, including, last December, the Committee on Legal Affairs. The Council is expected to receive a revision shortly. A common position on the revision could be reached by June 1992.
