Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas (r) takes the oath of office with his hand on a Qu'ran in front of President Yasir Arafat (l) in the latter's West Bank compound in Ramallah, April 30. In taking office, the moderate Abbas fulfilled a key condition for the issuance of a U.S.-backed plan for Middle East peace.
