United Methodist Church

Christian Century, May 22, 2002

* For the first time, a woman has been selected as president of the United Methodist Church's Council of Bishops. Sharon Brown Christopher, bishop of the Great Rivers Conference in Illinois, was elected May 3 by 150 bishops from around the world. Christopher served as bishop of the Minnesota Conference from 1988 to 1996 before moving to Great Rivers.

With Bishop Sharon Rader of Wisconsin serving as secretary of the bishops' council, two women hold the top leadership posts in the UMC.
