* Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos I of Constantinople, the spiritual head of millions of Orthodox Christians, has been honored with the 2002 Sophie Prize for his work in defending the environment. The prize, sponsored by the Norwegian Sophie Foundation, includes an award of $100,000--one of the most generous in the field of the environment and sustainable development.
The patriarch, 62, was awarded the prize in recognition of his "pioneering efforts in linking faith to the environment."
