* After more than 20 years as president of Princeton Theological Seminary, Thomas W. Gillespie will retire next year, according to trustees of the 700-student seminary, the largest theological school in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). A pastor in two California churches before becoming Princeton Seminary's fifth president in 1983, Gillespie has focused on increasing racial and cultural diversity among students and professors during his tenure, New endowed chairs under his watch include the John A.
Mackay Chair in World Christianity, which brings scholars from around the world to the New Jersey campus. Gillespie, who earned a Ph.D. in New Testament studies in Claremont, often preached in chapel and taught New Testament exegesis. He has served as chair of the PCUSA Committee on Theological Education and chairs the board of the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton. He will retire June 30, 2004.
