AT RISK? Retired United Methodist Bishop C. Dale White introduces the book United Methodism at Risk: A Wake-Up Call at a conference in Atlanta. The book was backed by an unoffical group led by White and layperson Beth Capen of Kingston, New York. It critically assesses conservative renewal movements within the UMC denomination.

Written by Leon Howell, the book was funded by Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis. Copies were also distributed at the Council of Bishops meeting April 28-May 2 in Dallas. "This books smacks of a desperate attempt to resuscitate a dying, liberal viewpoint in the church," said James v. Heidinger II, president-publisher of Good News, one of the groups critiqued.
