* Suzanne Radley Hiatt, 65, widely considered the architect of the "irregular ordination" of 11 women to the Episcopal priesthood in 1974, died May 30 after a long struggle with cancer. A lifelong academic, Hiatt was one of the "Philadelphia 11" ordained in a ceremony two years before the Episcopal General Convention officially approved the ordination of women and "regularized" the Philadelphia rites.

"The church has lost a fearless leader," said President-dean Steven Charleston of the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Hiatt began her teaching career in 1975 and retired in 1998 as emeritus professor of pastoral theology.
