TO END HUNGER: Anglican archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane of Cape Town, South Africa, addresses a crowd of more than 1,500 at an interfaith service June 6 at Washington National Cathedral that featured leaders of more than 40 religious organizations, including Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu representatives.

Of them, 35 signed an appeal to President Bush not to cut federal funding for antipoverty and hunger programs. David Beckman, president of Bread for the World, which sponsored the weeklong awareness-raising activities, said he was hopeful that bipartisan-backed bill, the Hunger Free Communities Act, would gain futher support as more legislators learn that mainstream evangelical leaders also advocate such antihunger steps.
