Born, born again

Christian Century, July 12, 2003 by Jill Alexander Essbaum

Born, born again.

Beneath the branch my flesh is sure--
   Not vindicated quite, not pure
   As infant snow--but mine--and firm
   Within His holy, hungry arms.
Against the sinews of this tree
He pours like water over me,
And I am wet. The lily groans.
Two bodies relent, bone for bone.
   The meadow overtakes the gates.
My darkness is His secret place.
