KERRY PICKS EDWARDS: Democratic presidential candidate Senator John Kerry (D., Mass.) puts his arm around vice presidential candidate Senator John Edwards (D., N.C.) as they appear together in Pittsburgh July 7. Edwards was raised as a Southern Baptist but later joined the United Methodist Church. Active in support of a homeless ministry in North Carolina's Raleigh-Durham area, Edwards once told the Interfaith Alliance that he distinguishes between his personal faith and a public responsibility to preserve church-state separation and to "not use faith for political purposes."
