Global perspective …

Christian Century, August 28, 2002 by Gayraud Wilmore

I READ, with much relief and profound gratitude, "Global gospel" (July 17-30), Sarah Miller's article about what's happening with the seed of the gospel in the underside of the globe.

As a CENTURY reader from way back, I have read more than enough about the American hunger for "spiritual formation," the nature and destiny of our privileged, white middle class, the wrangling within dying mainline denominations over Christian orthodoxy and homosexuality, and sparkling liberal commentary. Commentary, observation, overview--no call to action, no invitation to movement.

Then, out of the mist of all the scholarly commentary comes light in the gathering gloom of Western Christianity. We need more in this beloved journal about the poor, marginalized, seeking and syncretizing majority at home and abroad. We can learn more about struggle and hope from them than we can by gazing at our own bejeweled navels.
