The parish church

Christian Century, July 4, 2001 by Ann Horn

(Suffolk, England)

   The silence of centuries
   gathers glass-stained sun,
   dapples cracked and graying walls
   where sculpted nobles
   sleep on great stone tombs,
   fine hands poised still
   in pious prayer.

   Through ancient calm
   an old song clearly streams,
   let the living, living, die--into
   the purest Light.
