Auto-bound …

Christian Century, Oct 4, 2003 by James M. Webb

THANKS TO Albert Borgmann and David Wood for their dialogue on the philosophy of technology ("Prime time," Aug. 23). I wonder why however, when dealing with "the technological shape and character of everyday life," the automobile is mentioned only in passing. The auto is the most omnipresent and influential component of our daily lives.

Paradoxically, the auto has become not only our indispensable servant but the arbiter of the terms of its servanthood. A philosophy that points us in the direction of making the car our servant and not our master would be welcome.
