* The National Council of Churches has named Spencer B. Bates, vice president at Claremont School of Theology, as interim finance director to oversee for the next 18 months the downsized ecumenical agency's finances. Bates replaces Barbara Black, who retired from the post earlier this year. Bob Edgar, NCC general secretary, is a former president at Claremont.
Also appointed was Sister Paul Teresa Hennessee as interim director of Faith and Order, overseeing talks among religious bodies on theological differences. Hennessee is a nun in the Religious Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement and has worked in mission in Canada, the U.S. and Brazil.
