Caption: BISHOPS ON THE HILL: Senator Hillary Clinton (D., N.Y.). a United Methodist, talks with Sharon Brown Christopher after the Illinois Area bishop gave the prayer in the U.S. Senate on November 5, a day when dozens of United Methodist bishops visited congressional offices daring the Council of Bishops meeting in Washington. Some lawmakers broke away from sessions to hear church concerns and brief the bishops on pending bills. At their council meeting, the bishops voted to create a permanent office in the United Methodist Building, which is near the Capitol. It will be headed by an executive secretary, always a retired bishop. Chosen for the first four-year term was a former California bishop, Roy Sano, who will take office September 1, 2004.
