John 1:14, by Timothy R. Botts
TIMOTHY R. BOTTS says, "I have only one talent. My wife wishes I could fix sinks." But all he can do is make art. For nearly 20 years he has been doing "expressive calligraphy," what he calls "word portraits from my meditations on the great texts of the Bible." Botts has published numerous collections of his art, including Portraits of the Word, Messiah (which contains the whole of the text Handel used) and a portfolio of 12 of his prints called Best-Loved Bible Verses. (Other examples of his work in this issue are on the cover and page 27.) His rendition of Deuteronomy 6:7-9 won the 2000 calligraphy prize at Chicago's Newberry Library and is part of its permanent collection. He helped to start Masterpiece Ministries, which cultivates the artistic gifts of young Christians. A native of Pennsylvania, Botts studied at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He lives in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and is director of design for Tyndale House Publishers. To see more of his work, go to www.timbotts.com.
