One of the country's most outspoken nuns, faced with expulsion from her religious order because of her ministry with gays, is leaving that order to join the Denver-based Sisters of Loretto. "I think I'll feel much more at home with the Lorettos," said Sister Jeannine Gramick, 59. Her order's leaders last year acceded to the Vatican's command that she stop her ministry to gays.

Ending her 41-year ties to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Gramick will continue her ministry with her new order. She described the School Sisters as "middle of the road" and the Sisters of Loretto as "trailblazers, not afraid to takes risks. They are fearless." Most of that order's members "have great support for her," said Sister Mary Ann Coyle, former president of the order.
