Our lips

Christian Century, Jan 17, 2001 by John Mann

We are asked to wait a lifetime
for heaven. We are asked to swim
a river whose name is forgetting.
Follow a drinking gourd till it
   pours out wine. Our lips
are parched each dawn. Our arms
huddle like prayers around the fire
of our body. Skin is an organ
   hungry for touch. Words live
at the back of our tongues.
   Songs rise in our throat.
