Harvard Divinity School has appointed Middle East studies expert William A. Graham and a history of religion professor as acting dean, pending the naming of a permanent successor to J. Bryan Hehir, who left to become president of Catholic Charities, U.S.A. Graham, a member of Harvard's faculty since 1973, currently chairs the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations in the arts and sciences faculty.

Graham's scholarly work has focused on early Islamic religious history and textual traditions, and on oral aspects of scripture in the history of world religions.
