Christmas gifts …
Christian Century, Jan 25, 2003 by David W. Corbin
JOHN BUCHANAN'S change of heart about the commercialization of Christmas suggests that he hasn't looked very closely at the activities surrounding Christmas these days ("The signs on Michigan Avenue," Dec. 4-17). It seems to me that we Christians should never cease to voice our alternative vision of what Christmas is about.
The incarnation did not inspire commerce. In fact there are substantial areas in which the incarnation and commerce work at cross-purposes. We Christians need to remain diligent in distancing ourselves from the consumer excesses that the commercialization of Christmas inspires. Christmas is a time to commemorate God's entry into the world. The excitement of that event should make getting (or giving) a new sweater irrelevant.
