* The missions agency of the United Methodist Church will cut its staff by 20 percent and trim spending by $6 million--citing the effect of a two-year drop in its stock portfolio, including the decline after the September 11 terrorist attacks. The United Methodist News Service said that officials will not fill some empty positions at the New York-based Board of Global Ministries.

They will eliminate other positions and also scale back spending by limiting travel, materials and program costs. The overseas agency coordinates 2,300 mission personnel in 71 countries for the nation's second-largest Protestant denomination. The agency employs more than 300 people.
