* UNICEF, for the first time designating Halloween proceeds for a single cause, plans to donate to Afghan children as much as $5 million--the amount the organization expected to collect on the evening of October 31. "All the proceeds for trick-or-treating for UNICEF are going to go to children in and around Afghanistan," Charles J.
Lyons, president of the U.S. Fund for the United Nations Children's Fund, said in a pre-Halloween news conference in Uzbekistan. Inspired by President Bush's call earlier in October for $1 contributions to a fund to help Afghan children, Lyons said UNICEF was already getting large donations from adults. "Individuals are writing us checks for $10,000, $20,000 for Afghanistan," he told Associated Press.
