Plans to celebrate the restoration of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. are on again after fund-raising problems were overcome. The first phase of work was halted in April at the church where King preached because the necessary money was depleted.
But after news reports prompted additional pledges of financial help, public and private contributions rose to almost $1.9 million, the Associated Press reported. The church is one of Atlanta's most popular tourist attractions and is a national historic site managed by the National Park Service. It has been part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site since 1999.
