Christian Century, Feb 22, 2003
Five of the nation's largest faith-based charities were ranked as part of Worth magazine's 100 most efficient charitable groups. In its December issue, charities were rated on how they spend an average of $100 in donations; groups that spend upwards of $75 on actual services are generally considered the most efficient.
America's Second Harvest, which funnels food to families and soup kitchens--two-thirds of them at churches and other houses of worship--spends $95 on services, $2.00 on fund raising, $1.00 on administration and $2.00 on reserves. The other four highly ranked religious groups were Catholic Charities, Lutheran Services in America, Volunteers of America and the Salvation Army.
