In the line of fire …

Christian Century, March 8, 2003 by William R. Phillippe

CONGRESSMAN Charles Rangel's proposal to renew the draft, ("Feeling a draft," Jan. 25), prompts me to ask why we don't go back to "days of old when men were bold," and kings, princes and caesars went with their troops into war. Perhaps when Congress says yes to a war, 10 percent of the Congress, chosen by lottery, should go with the troops.

We could also include the cabinet in this--and even our president, who would want to be there urging the troops on.
