Churchgoing: First Presbyterian Church in Topeka, Kansas
Christian Century, Oct 19, 1994 by Randall Balmer
Richards has another tie to Topeka. His wife is an associate pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in town. "She's a straight woman," Richards said matter-of-factly, "but she's very active in the gay and lesbian community in Topeka." Richards estimated that he and his wife talk by phone two or three times a week.
"She's been incredibly supportive," he said, and their plans for the moment are to remain married. "I'm incredibly fortunate," Richards said, "Most gay men are unable to maintain any sort of relationship with their wives." As retirement approaches, Richards and his wife hope to relocate to the same area of the country. "I'm happy," Richards said, "as happy as anyone can be who's been through this situation."
