Life march

Christian Century, March 18, 1998 by J. Barrie Shepherd

Whatever we believe

we are capable of coping with,

Lent drags us in its daily wake,

trudging across crusted ice and mud,

toward that palm-strewn plunge

followed by the maundy-meal,

the garden, Golgotha's cruel shame,

then that sunrise word

that's never quite believable,

yet never can be set aside, because

it tugs at every buried thing we wish

we might believe or even hope for,

bids us let it rise, brings us

back to life again.
