Very Annie Mary: Sara Sugarman, U.K., 2000. - movie review

Film Comment, March-April, 2002 by Chris Chang

Very bad title for a very good indie. A young Welsh musical prodigy voluntarily abandons her singing career when her mother dies. She ekes out a frustrated existence under the roof of her domineering, operatic baker father and when she gets the opportunity to break free, she does so with the involvement of her entire idiosyncratic Garw Valley village.

In the title role, Rachel Griffiths supplies a pitch-perfect blend of allure and oddballness. (opens Mar. 22)
