We Were Soldiers: Randall Wallace, U.S., 2002. - movie review

Film Comment, March-April, 2002 by Chris Chang

Lt. Col. Mel Gibson plays an old-school warrior brought in to inspire and lead the first Air Cavalry batallion to see combat in Vietnam. Though it easily makes up for what Black Hawk Down lacked in character, plot, and morality, its sentimentality ensures that this, too, is no masterpiece. Play-by-play strategy buffs definitely need not dismay: it's an obvious contender in the Most-Rounds-Fired-Onscreen stakes.

Brace yourself for the opening bullet-in-the-face kickoff. (now playing)
