Film Society Seen - notable events during New York Film Festival - Brief Article

Film Comment, Nov, 2000 by Paul Volpe

The 38th NYFF featured 36 films from 22 countries and 100s of reasons to celebrate. Lars von Trier's Dancer In The Dark kicked off opening night with a black tie bash at Tavern On The Green, Post-screening party guests were divided into two camps, "loved it" and "hated it." Open-bar revelers had the same 50/50 opinion of Icelandic singer/songwriter/palm d'or winner Bjork's "gown from Mars," but all agreed the renaissance imp deserves our respect.

Deneuve proved once again to be a class act on the screen as well as in person. Additional NYFF events included a live score written by Wycliffe Gordon for the silent classic Body and Soul, Earlier in the month, the FSLC and the N.Y. Times hosted The Next Generation of Film weekend, featuring seminars with the participation of young filmmakers, spfx wizards and film critics.
