Ebony, August, 1999

At the March on Washington, internationally renowned singer Mahalia Jackson delivers a stirring rendition of the spiritual "I've Been `Buked and I've Been Scorned" during the August 28, 1963, demonstration. More than 250,000 people participated in the demonstration that, at the time, was the largest civil rights demonstration in history.

For nearly three hours, the mass of people listened to a variety of speakers, including the Rev. Martin, Luther King Jr., who delivered on this, day his, famous "I Have A Dream" speech. The speakers demanded immediate passage of a civil rights bill and implementation of basic guarantees outlined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
