Charles B. Rangel, the powerful politician who has been called "Mr. Harlem," is serving his 16th consecutive term in Congress since his election to the seat on Nov. 3, 1970. Rangel is the ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee and a leading member of the Democratic Party as deputy whip. A decorated army soldier who served in Korea, Rangel graduated from New York University and received his law degree at St.

John's University. Rangel lives in Harlem with his wife, Alma. They have two children.
