Sisters in shorts - Beauty and style: for the new black woman
Ebony, August, 2002
WITH warm weather finally engulfing the country, minds and bodies are focusing on how to stay cool in the summer heat. The answer is shorts, shorts and more shorts. Sisters who wear pants and panty hose or tights all winter welcome the chance to bring their legs out of hiding. Women who wouldn't think of wearing a miniskirt don't hesitate to cool down in shorts. It doesn't matter whether your legs are big, slim, chunky or shapely--put your inhibitions aside and enjoy the summer in shorts.
Shorts are ideal for summer weekends, whether you're lounging around the house, running errands or enjoying recreational activities with the kids. And they are as common at cookouts and picnics as are hot dogs and barbecued ribs. And though they are most valued as casual attire, shorts ensembles also can go upscale and uptown to dressier summer social events.
While the decision as to which shorts to buy and wear is not as agonizing to most women as purchasing a swimsuit, many women ponder the pros and cons of showing off their legs. The decision usually focuses on which style of shorts best suits your body and your lifestyle. In other words, how short and how tight should your shorts be? It all depends on your level of modesty and cellulite.
For those upscale summer soirees, there are silk shorts outfits, and lengths range from short-short to knee-length. Also keep in mind that coordinated ensembles are plentiful, with longer, fuller shorts being accompanied by jackets, while some styles may be accompanied by wrap-tie or shirt jacket.
On the casual front, there are many choices of styles: form-fitting short-shorts; comfortable, practical walking shorts that fall to mid-thigh or the knee; utilitarian-styled cargo shorts that are popular with younger women who aren't deterred by the patch pockets that add pounds; and, of course, the denim shorts. Many styles are available with drawstring waists so women don't have to worry about problematic waistlines.
The Don'ts of Donning Shorts
* Don't wear form-fitting shorts if you have cellulite. Spandex and other body-hugging fabrics will accentuate your cellulite. Choose roomier styles and more forgiving fabrics that de-emphasize the problem areas
* Don't wear prints, horizontal stripes, bright colors and cargo pockets if your thighs are heavy. They will only draw attention to your flaws
* Don't wear flat-front or drawstring shorts if you have a midriff pouch unless you cover your waistline with a loose top and tuck in the strings so they won't bulge. Pleated styles also help to camouflage the stomach
* Don't wear cuffed shorts if you have short legs. They make you look shorter
* Don't wear short-shorts in inappropriate settings, and never wear shorts to work or to business events, unless it's a company picnic.
