ANNETTA WATTS NUNN is the first Black female police chief in Birmingham, Ala. Her appointment is especially significant because she supervises a police department that became internationally notorious during the civil rights era, when Public Safety Commissioner Eugene (Bull) Connor ordered police to use police dogs and fire hoses on civil rights demonstrators.

During Nunn's 23 years on the force, she was Birmingham's first Black female deputy police chief. She is the second Black police chief in the city. Nunn graduated valedictorian from Jackson-Olin High School and magna cum laude from the University of Alabama with a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice. Chief Nunn lives in Birmingham with her husband, Robert Nunn Sr., and their sons, Robert Jr. and Stephen.
