Ebony, August, 2003
Q Now that children are returning to school, they will be exposed to a variety of germs and get sick. Sore throats are common, but how can you know if it's strep throat?
R.S., Birmingham
A Strep throat is the most common type of streptococcal infection. Doctors say the symptoms appear suddenly and include sore throat, a general feeling of illness, headache, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and a rapid heartbeat. The tonsils are swollen and lymph nodes in the neck may be enlarged and tender. Those who are affected by strep throat generally get better in two weeks, but antibiotics can shorten the duration.
