Mary Mary

Ebony,  August, 2005  by Lynn Norment

Gospel duo MARY MARY delivers another jubilant set with their new recording, Mary Mary (Sony Urban Music), on which they testify, give praise and otherwise leave no doubt about the inspiration for their Grammy Award-winning platinum music. After taking time off to start families, sisters Erica and Tina Campbell return to the charts with enhanced emotional depth, earthy soul and stronger faith.

From the first notes of the testimonial "I'm a Believer," the listener is impacted by the duo's unwavering faith. Producer Warryn Campbell offers a change of pace with "Biggest Greatest Thing," which is set against the sound of a '30s big band, while "Heaven" has a '60s pop flavor. Among the offerings is the blues-gospel spiritual "Yesterday," on which the lyrics and the vocals are equally strong. Similar from-the-heart lyrics and passionate delivery are heard and felt on "What Is This" "Save Me" kicks off with rap rhymes that set the pace for the sweetly performed song of adoration and praise, and "The Real Party" is truly a party jam, with God being the focus of the celebration. As with their previous recordings, Mary Mary demonstrates that they are "just two girls from California who love the God and are glad about the talent God's given us."
