Top High School Seniors - Letters To The Editor - Letter to the Editor

Ebony, Sept, 2002

I think that it is incredible that you acknowledge the successes of young Black America. For the past five years I have looked forward to reading the "Top Black High School Seniors" article (July 2002). At one point, I hoped to be one of those who would be featured. I just graduated in the Top 10 of my class from Brighton High School in Brighton, Tenn. I was the president of the National Honor Society, editor-in-chief of the yearbook, founding president of our physics club, and vice president of Student Council. I was involved in both the Governor's School and Hugh O'Brian Youth Leader shop programs. I have received college credit through the Advanced Placement program and have been featured in Who's Who Among American High School Students. I was honored at my school as the "Student of the Year" and as one of my school's first four recipients of the Monticello Award, an award for high academic achievement and integrity. I have been fortunate enough to have received over $115,000 in scholarships and grants and will attend Princeton University to study molecular biology/pre-med.

As an educator who is watching many of our at-risk youth, my applause goes to the "Top High School Seniors." Their community service and academic accomplishments are outstanding.
