Glaucoma - Letters to the editor - Letter to the Editor

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the article, "Glaucoma: 'The Sneak Thief Of Sight'" (July 2003). As an African-American, the race that it strikes at a higher rate than any other, I see this disease stealing the sight of people of all ages. Damage from glaucoma is irreversible, but if detected early enough, it can be controlled with medication.

There are ways for patients to be treated if their concern is the cost of medicine. I urge every African-American who has a history of glaucoma in his/her family and those who have been diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension to make it a point to get tested for glaucoma. Early detection is the best medicine. Thank you again for an educational article.
