JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Individuality is the golden rule on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University. Some students like to emulate the conservative attire of Charlotte's successful business professionals, while others are more prone to dress like their favorite hip-hop artists.

Student Chaundra Crawford says that she loves to mix and match various trends.

"My style is trendy yet sophisticated," she says. "I love to wear vintage clothing that has a unique sense to it. But overall, I have a fresh style that is very feminine and updated."

MUST-HAVES:

Smith University ladies showcase unique handbags, and loads of jewelry, because no matter what you wear, your accessories must complement your outfit. Gents are really into square-toe shoes, linen slacks, anything in denim, and pure white gym shoes.

HANGOUT:

"The one place on campus where all fashionable students like to hang out is the Student Union," says Daryl Jackson, who says his style is conservative and comfortable. "This is an area where all students check their mail, have lunch and socialize."

HOT TIP:

It's unanimous--whatever you wear, you should be yourself, and be comfortable.

SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

BATON ROUGE,

Southern University students aren't shy about wanting to look their very best at all times.

"I'm very trendy. I like to wear the latest styles that are popular," says student Melissa Prejean. "Everyone here tries to stay on top of the latest fashion trends, and wear the latest fashions."

MUST-HAVES:

Southern University's ladies prefer bold, beautiful colors, denim skirts and pumps. Gents admire rapper Jay-Z's look: button-down shirts, baseball caps, and pure white gym shoes.

HANGOUT:

Every Wednesday, students engage in the proud tradition of dressing to the nines and converging on the Student Union at high noon.

"We call it 'Pretty Wednesdays,'" Prejean quips. "Everyone dresses up. They wear their best outfits and meet in the Union at noon. It's our tradition."

HOT TIP:

Southern University students say that you shouldn't try to keep up with the Joneses--grow into your own style--there's nothing more stylish than wearing what you really like.
