Heart drug for Blacks

Ebony,  Sept, 2005

Q When I turned 35 years old, I began to experience some heart problems that continue to affect my life today. I'm 49 now and want to know about this new controversial heart drug that's just for Blacks. What's so special about it?

T.F., Charleston, S.C.

A The drug you are referring to is called BiDil, a drug to treat heart failure in Blacks, making it the first medicine ever approved for a specific racial group.

Even with FDA approval, it hasn't been determined why the controversial drug works for Blacks but not Whites. Doctors say heart failure develops when the heart is weakened and doesn't pump enough blood, causing heart attacks, infections and high blood pressure.

According to researchers, heart failure is more common in Blacks and other people who are 65 and older. Additionally, statistics say Blacks are likely to develop heart failure symptoms at an earlier age, experience worsening heart failure faster, and they are more likely to die from heart failure.
