First Black USS Constitution Commander - Speaking Of People - Brief Article

U.S. Navy Commander LEWIN C. WRIGHT is the first Black commanding officer of the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat. President George Washington authorized the ship, nicknamed "Old Ironsides," for construction in 1794. Commander Wright will supervise a crew of 55 and welcome as many as 600,000 tourists annually to the ship, whose home is the Boston Harbor.
The naval commander completed officer candidate school in 1985 and has held several positions, including operations officer, executive officer and assistant for strategy for the director of the surface warfare division. Commander Wright earned a bachelor's degree in computer science from Brandeis University, a master's degree in business administration from Benedictine College, and he completed Joint Professional Military Education Phase One at the Army Command and General Staff College. He and his wife, Sharon Greene-Wright, live in Boston.
